What is plains game?

Africa’s classic
first safari.

“Plains game” is the term hunters use for Africa’s antelope and other non-dangerous game. For many hunters it is the first African safari, with days spent glassing and stalking alongside a professional hunter and trackers.

Wyant Adventures, long known as Dan Wyant Adventures, works with an African partner founded in 1991 that operates from Johannesburg, South Africa. Ryan and Dan help you choose the hunt, understand the costs and arrive ready.

Planning questions

Plains game FAQ

When is the best time for a plains game hunt in South Africa?

Most plains game safaris are booked during South Africa’s dry winter months, roughly May through September, when cooler weather and thinner cover suit hunting. Ryan will confirm the dates available with the outfitter.

How long is the Askival plains game safari?

The hunt is offered as a 7-day or 10-day safari, guided either 2 on 1 at $650.00 per day or 1 on 1 at $750.00 per day.

Are animal fees included in the daily rate?

No. Animal harvest fees apply to animals harvested, or wounded and lost, in addition to the daily rate. Ask Ryan for the current fee list before you book.

Can I hunt plains game with a rifle or a bow?

Plains game is hunted with both rifle and bow. Tell Ryan and Dan how you want to hunt and they will confirm the options with the outfitter.

What about getting my trophies home?

Trophy export, dip-and-pack and taxidermy take planning. Dan is a professional taxidermist with 35 years of experience, and the team can help you think it through before you travel.
